Perfection Leads to Burnout

Chasing perfection might seem noble, but it often drains the joy and energy from the very things you care about. Today is about recognizing when enough is truly enough.

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor.” – Anne Lamott

PILLAR: Boundaries
FOCUS: Self-preservation

Reflection

Perfection carries a heavy cost. At first, it feels like motivation—pushing you to do your best, polish every detail, and hold yourself to a high standard. But over time, that push turns into a pull that drains your energy and steals your joy. What once felt like dedication becomes exhaustion disguised as ambition.

I’ve had seasons where I poured myself into a project, determined to make it flawless. Late nights blurred into early mornings, my mind spinning through endless “what ifs” and “just one more tweaks.” The end result might have been impressive to others, but I was left with nothing but fatigue and a sense of detachment from the work I had once loved. In trying to perfect it, I had squeezed the life out of it.

Burnout doesn’t arrive in a single moment—it builds quietly. Skipped breaks, neglected needs, and relentless standards accumulate until your mind and body wave the white flag. Learning to recognize “good enough” isn’t lowering your standards—it’s preserving your energy for the things that truly matter. When you let go of perfection, you make space for sustainability, creativity, and joy to return.
